I took this hotel because of a very good reviews in Rough Guide – Sri Lanka and it was a huge mistake!

Services and rooms are absolutely average, 40USD for a room with fan, 50USD with AC, 4USD for breakfast out of season. The hotel is 200 meters far from beach, nearby a noisy communication. Once you cross the street and go the beach you get the same quality for less money directly on the beach, where you can get a room with AC for 4000RP (30usd) or 2500RP with FAN (18USD), the breakfast in the hotel was also average (one egg, toast, jam), for 4USD you can get in all restaurants in the neighborhood a good western style breakfast.

Based on the very positive evaluation in the tourist guide we decided also to hire a car with driver for 5 days tour around Sri Lanka. We paid for 5 days 500EURO (route – Negombo, Galle, Yala, Ella, Nuware Eliya, Kandy, Dambulla, Sigiria, Trincomale), We knew from the early start that it is over-expensive, but we wanted to relax and avoid organizing anything…

What went well?

– We got a really big, comfortable AC car
– Very good English speaking driver

What went bad?

– However we paid drivers accommodation in the price, in every hotel we paid it again inclusive food for him, because he knew everyone everywhere (it was very funny when you speak with other tourist in the same hotel who paid 2000Rp less than you) If we started to complain he explained us hundreds of reasons, why are the other hotels bad. At the end you speak about 2000Rp delta per days, which are small money, but I hate to be cheated in such a visible way!
– Everything organized by the driver was 30% more expensive as other toursist paid
– He was telling us very high price for everything, just to pump money from us. (e.g. standard price of rice and curry 800Rp.)
– The driver was just a driver, no guide, he just drive you from A to B as a taxi
– Other people had driver for 50EURO/USD with the same stops and services
– Once we removed anything from the way, it was no problem, once we wanted to go somewhere more (plus 30km) it were immediately extra money
– We were listening all the way, how is it good for us because we get a lot of things for free (e.g. tea in Nuwara Elia which is cheaper in the UK as in the plantation where is it produced)

At the end we were so angry, that we finished one day before. Afterwards we made a trip on our own for seven days with the same kilometers (just other direction) by taxi, bus, tuk-tuk, inclusive one safari, two scuba diving days and spend 50% less money for 7 days as we spend with him for 4 days.
